Chapter Eight
Hannah stared at the notebook in front of her, trying to figure out what to do next. She was worried that this escalation wouldnât stop, and whatever happened at the next business the robber struck would be even worse than what happened to George, if such a thing was possible.
She remembered Mrs. Eldridgeâs words and swallowed. This did seem dangerous, but she didnât think she had enough evidence to go to the police. If this was a wild goose chase, she didnât want to waste their time. For all she knew, they already knew all of this. It wasnât as though they had to share their information with her.
After a few minutes, she got an idea of what she wanted to do next, but she needed to make a call to the detective in charge of Georgeâs case. She found his card in her wallet and dialed his number, not wanting to put it off. When he answered, she asked him if it was all right for her to return to the restaurant and make sure the appliances that needed to be on were on and the ones that needed to be off were off. He told her she was free to take care of any business she had there, but asked her not to reopen until after the weekend at the earliest, in case they needed to return to look for any more evidence in the case. She was fine with that. She still wasnât ready to reopen the restaurant, anyway; she just wanted to poke around.
She also didnât want to go alone, so she called Ben and explained what she wanted to do. It took her a while to tell him about the robberies, and even though she didnât know exactly what she thought she might find at the restaurant, she had a feeling she might find something.
âAll right,â he said with his usual good nature. âIâll be free by eight, if that works for you.â
âHow about closer to ten?â Hannah asked. âI want it to be late enough that no one will be around to see us.â
He sounded a bit more skeptical when he replied, but thankfully he still agreed to go with her. She thanked him and ended the call, then sat back down to pour over all of the information she had gathered, once more. One way or another, she was determined to help figure out what had happened to George and to make sure it didnât happen to anyone else.
By the time Ben picked her up that night, she was dressed head to toe in black. She had drawn the line at a ski mask, partially because she didnât own one, but other than that she thought she looked rather like a cat burglar. Ben gave her an appraising look as she got into the car.
âYou did get permission from the police for this, right? Because, I know itâs your restaurant, but I still donât know how Iâd feel about breaking into it.â
âOf course,â she said.
